| Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument is one of the more recent additions to the national park system and is located in southern Utah, between Capitol Reef and Lake Powell. There are three main areas to this park, the Kaiparowits Plateau, the Grand Staircase and the Escalante River and Canyon. This is a wilderness area with only one defined trail in the park. The trail goes an easy three miles to lower Calf Creek Falls one of the most beautiful falls in the Southwest. Other attractions in this remote area include Peek a Boo and spooky, two very narrow slot canyons, Wilson arch, Kodochrome basin, Hells Backbone and much more. One of the most beautiful drives in the country if not the world is state Rd 12 From the town of Escalante to Boulder then continuing on a dirt road through Capitol Reef National park. Two dirt roads pass through the park, the Hole in the Wall Road and Cottonwood Canyon Rd passing some of the most colorful scenery anywhere. |
