| Our country’s first National Park, Yellowstone was established in 1872 by President Grant. Yellowstone National Park is mostly in the Northwestern part of Wyoming, and goes into southern Montana. Being the site of one of the greatest volcanic eruptions in the history of the world, this is a unique region. Yellowstone has the most geyers and geothermal areas of any place in the world, including the world famous Old Faithful, which erupts about every hour. Perhaps the most colorful geothermal area is in the mammoth spring area with the beautiful Minerva terrace. Yellowstone has some of the greatest range of wildlife, with black and grizzly bears, elk, deer, eagles, wolves and bison. In the winter, the snow blankets the ground and the bison and snowmobiles can take you around. Yellowstone is also famous for its upper and lower waterfalls, surrounded by the yellowish rocks and the smell of sulpher. There is a trail of about 600 steps that go to the bottom of the waterfall. Just south of Yellowstone is Grand Teton National park and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the gateway city to these parks. In 1988 on half of Yellowstone burnt down in one of this countries largest forest fires. In the long run, this will be beneficial to the land, and even in the last sixteen years, one can see the remarkable way that nature has brought forth new life on this wonderful land. |
