| Amsterdam, with its festive atmosphere, beautiful homes, art and culture is one of the most popular cities in Europe. Perhaps the best thing to do in this city is walk aimlessly along the tree lined, village like streets that are adjacent to the houseboat lined, canals that ring this city and crossed by hundreds of small bridges. Its narrow streets and canals make the city appear to be more like a village that a big city. Perhaps the most famous tourist destination is the Anne Frank house. This is the actual home and attic that the family lived in until they were taken to their deaths. Amsterdam is the home to some of the greatest artists, including Van Gaugh, Mondrian, Rembrandt and Vermeer. The Rijksmuseum is the most famous with Rembrandt’s “Night watch” and Vermeer’s “The Milk Maid” among its highlights. . The largest collection of Vincent Van Gaugh can be seen at the Van Gaugh Museum. Amsterdam has lenient drug laws and it is legal to buy marijuana in one of the many coffee houses. In this city, prostitution is legal and a big attraction is the Red Light district where there are hundreds of girls inside tiny rooms looking out of their windows, with a red light over them. When the shades are up, they are open for business, when the shades are down, they are, hmm, busy. Their equivalent of Central Park is Vondelpark and is a lot of fun. In addition just outside of Amsterdam are those wonderful windmills and in the spring the blooming of the tulips is a world-class spectacle. Another spectacle not to miss is queen’s day; this is when everyone comes out and has a really wild and crazy time. Dam Square, the Heineken brewery, canal tours, you will not be bored in Amsterdam.
