| The Austrian Alps between the German Alps to the north and the Italian Alps to the south. This area is considered part of the eastern Alps. Included in this area are the cities of Innsbruck and Salzburg. Two of the most spectacular roads in the world pass through these peaks, the Brenner Pass and the Grossglockner highway. I traveled on the Grossglockner highway. This f48 kilometer mountain pass is perhaps the longest and finest alpine road in Europe. This tolled road is one hairpin turn after another with some of the best mountain scenery there is, including views of the Grossglockner, the highest mountain in Austria at 3798 meters. This road starts on the north side, just below Zell Am See and ends on the southern end at Heilenblut, a quaint little village. There are a number of turnoffs, one going to the Edelweisspzitz, the highest viewpoint, another going to the home of The Hapsburg Emperor, Franz Joseph, and also don’t miss going to Hohe Tauern, a national park. |
